4 Ways to Unlock God’s True Calling in Your Life
Sep 01, 2021If you’ve ever wondered, “Now what?!” following a life-changing event, you are not alone. The life we lead, as meaningful as we think it is, oftentimes centers around our own desires and that is when we can experience rude awakenings. That’s why it’s imperative to trust in God to guide us to our true calling.
Life’s calling is bigger than we can imagine. We all have certain gifts the Lord has bestowed on us, which makes us a vessel on this Earth for His work. When we seek purpose in life, only then will we become fulfilled. However, you might be confused as to how to unlock your true calling.
Take it from me, someone who spent years in corporate America working in a job I thought was my purpose. And it was for a season. One day, the Lord decided my purpose there had been fulfilled and it was time to find my true calling. I received the call that my position was no longer needed and while that was life-shattering to hear, I am grateful today for that call.
Find your purpose in life and listen to what God has in store for you. Open your heart to Him and only then will you be able to truly listen.
What is a True Calling?
A true calling is much deeper than our earthly desires and needs. It is the way in which we serve the Lord, which leads us to serve others through Him as the image of Christ. “For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set], so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us].” Ephesians 2:10 (Amplified).
Many of us go through a season of asking “What is God’s plan for my life?” A true calling uses our strengths, talents, and gifts. A true calling also uses our weaknesses, where God shows up through us. God uses our true calling for His glory. Our true calling furthers His kingdom so it is up to us to listen and act upon what we are meant to do.
God shows you your plan through the Holy Spirit. When you listen to God’s calling for your life, only then will you live a life fulfilled.
What a True Calling Isn’t
To be clear, a true calling is not about you. All the plans you have for your life and the paths you take to get what you want will not lead you to a fulfilled life. It is about what God has planned for you. You can keep going in the direction you want, but if it’s not what God’s plan is, then it won’t last.
Everyone is called on for the good of others. While you can chase money, recognition, and fame, that is not a true calling. When you seek His presence, accept Him into your daily life, and let Him transform you, then He will guide you to the path He has set for you.
4 Ways to Trust in God to Unlock Your True Calling
There is no doubt that in order to unlock your true calling, you must trust in God. Here is how you can open your heart to God and allow His will to be done in your life.
1. Pray
Prayer is a lifeline to God. When we pray, we are speaking directly to Him. This is a time of peace and surrender to Him. Sit in God’s presence and truly listen to His voice. Let Him lead your time together.
Praying is more than just reading a daily devotional. Invite the Holy Spirit in, ask Him to reveal Himself, and seek guidance from Him to tell you who you are and show you your true calling. God wants you to use everything He has given you, therefore, choose to focus on Him in order for His direction in your life to take place.
2. Make A List
Write down all the things you do well, your strengths. Then add your spiritual gifts and talents. Create a visual and map out your calling. Look at your list and consider how to serve others through the gifts God blessed you with.
The spiritual gifts and talents can be found by asking yourself questions like: “If I could talk about or do one thing for the rest of my life, what would that be?” “What are some things I love doing?” Think purposefully about the answers, write them out, and pray over them.
We are all familiar with where we fall short, but we often don’t think God can use these things. Make a list of your weaknesses and limitations; these are the areas where you need God to show up and assist you. Bring these weaknesses to God and ask for His help. God wants to equip you to do the work He has called you.
3. Seek Trusted Counsel
There may be times when you feel you aren’t hearing God’s voice or maybe you don’t know you can hear God, or even how. This is the time when you should seek trusted counsel who can partner with the Holy Spirit to guide you.
As a spiritual director and life coach, I have experience, wisdom, and knowledge on how to help women leaders and entrepreneurs hear, experience, and lead from a voice of clarity, so they can show up with purpose and impact those they are called to serve. Together with the Holy Spirit, I can also help you.
4. Remind Yourself Who God Is
God is the alpha, omega, the beginning, and the end. He is the creator of life and the master of your purpose in life. Look to Him always, not just in times of distress. Have faith in God and you will become a force in this world that leads with clarity and purpose.
Find Your True Calling to Live a Fulfilling Life
Once you have unlocked God’s calling for your life, your life will never be the same again. Listen to Him and your path will be clear. Declare the Lord’s will into your life of purpose and service to others.
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (Peter 4:10-11)
There is no wrong way to pray or to be in God’s presence. The most important thing to do is invite the Holy Spirit in and let God’s will be done in your life. Your spiritual journey is a life-long journey. Trust in God and your life’s calling will lead you to fulfillment.
